The GranuFlo and NaturaLyte Recall

GranuFlo and NaturaLyte are drugs that were used by thousands of dialysis clinics around the country to remove toxins in the blood during treatments. They were recalled after research suggested that they were putting patients at risk for catastrophic health problems, including:

  • Heart Attacks
  • Cardiopulmonary Arrest
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Stroke
  • Sudden Cardiac Death

Fresenius Medical Care first informed the public about the potential risks associated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte in a March 2012 Urgent Product Notification. That notice was later declared a Class I GranuFlo recall by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Class I recalls are the most serious type, and are only issued when a medical product poses an extremely high risk of serious injury or death.

The GranuFlo lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are investigating allegations that Fresenius Medical Care was actually aware of the dangers associated with GranuFlo and NaturaLyte long before the products were recalled. Among other things, our dialysis attorneys have learned of a November 2011 memo the company sent to clinics it operates which warned doctors to adjust dosage of the drugs so as to avoid excessive levels of bicarbonate in the blood. Excess bicarbonate can lead to a condition called metabolic alkalosis, which has been linked to heart attacks, sudden cardiac death, and other catastrophic heart problems in dialysis patients. Among other things, the November 2011 memo warned that GranuFlo and NaturaLyte had been associated with a six-fold increase in sudden cardiac death among patients undergoing dialysis at Fresenius clinics. Despite the danger detailed in that memo, thousands of other dialysis clinics outside the Fresenius network were not informed of these issues until March 2012.
